The Art of Wine Tasting

Learning to truly appreciate a wine and the whole process of wine making has been an occupation since early times, and since then, discerning a wine’s flavor has become an art. Wine tasting is now a true methodology which has as main purpose describing the aroma, flavor and the general characteristics of a wine.

When it comes to wine tasting, there are some few necessary steps one must do in order to establish the wine’s complexity, its potential, the character and its possible faults. The necessary steps include these stages:

  • the appearance
  • ”in glass” – which stands for the aroma of the wine
  • ”in mouth” – which stands for the actual tasting of the wine
  • the finish or the aftertaste

    The appearanceBefore the actual wine tasting, wines can be characterized by their overall aspect. Without knowing just by tasting if a wine is light or heavy, one has other ways of analyzing a wine.
    For example, a deep intense color states that the wine is probably heavy, and they’ll be more intense when smelling.

    To best judge a wine by just looking, the wine should be checked from the rim edges to the middle of the glass – that’s why experts recommend having a white background during this procedure. From the wine’s color to its opacity and sediments, everything is important and crucial.

    When judging a wine, the bouquet and the taste are the most important things to notice and to observe. The bouquet is best revealed when swirling the wine in a wine glass – in this way, the oxygen will expose all the wine’s bouquet, by releasing the molecules “responsible” for the bouquet. Even the glass wine has a great influence when tasting wine; its ideal form is being wider at the bottom and narrow at its aperture.

  • Tasting a wine involves more than just one of our senses – the taste, the olfactory sense, and seeing. Part by part, the wine reveals its attributes and only after every stage it can be truly characterized.

    That’s why the phase of the tasting is so important. Combining the texture, the flavor and all the mouthfeel attributes, the wine tells its story. One of the most important steps in wine tasting is holding it into the mouth for a few seconds, so the taste buds will be enough saturated; only when the wine passes slowly through the mouth the connoisseur will be fully aware of wine’s full aroma.


    The wine’s finish is determined by the period describing how long the flavor impression lasts after swallowing the wine. This is perhaps one of the most important stages in wine tasting, as it’s the period where the wine culminates at its full aroma. A wine’s aftertaste can last for a few seconds or more, and it can persist on the back of the mouth and in the throat. This is also the time to establish if the wine was light-bodied or, vice versa, full-bodied.

    Wine tasting reaches its highest forms of art when included in the several wine tasting events available: the vertical tasting, the horizontal tasting and tasting flights. When it comes to better compare vineyards and vintages, the vertical tasting is recommended. It includes vintages of the same wine type from the same winery.

    The horizontal tasting refers to comparing wine from the same vintage, but from different wineries, emphasizing differences between the wineries. The tasting flights are events in which wines are compared with several other wines, just for the purpose of comparison and sampling.
